Sidewalks near Westwood finally going in

The Westwood area is finally getting sidewalks. The move comes over three years after The Saturday Independent penned a series of articles and editorials begging the City of Manchester to remedy the dangerous walking zone for school children.

A stretch of road along Oakdale Street to the Moore Street stop sign is frequented by elementary and junior high school-aged children who are forced to dodge traffic to and from school.

However the first phase of the project will start at Lynchburg Rd. This phase is being funded in full by the city. The $67,000 project was initiated in the city streets committee with votes from Alderman French, Parsley, and Norman.  

The Oakdale Street project is being brought together through the Safe Routes to School grant. The sidewalk work on Oakdale Street is on hold pending architects designs.The city will be funding the balance of what the state grant will cover. 

"It is my understanding that we are waiting on architects on the Oakdale project," Alderman Ryan French told tsinews.com.
"This project is a long overdue and a necessary step to insuring the safety of our children walking to school in the Westwood area. This is been a major priority of mine since taking office, and I'm glad to see it take shape."
